Project Overview
Engineering a reliable & operator-friendly water treatment system

A major hyperscale data center developer in the Midwest needed a reliable, operator-friendly cooling tower makeup water solution.

Napier-Reid, an Axius Water company, delivered a fit-for-purpose treatment system that met water quality requirements while optimizing capital costs, reducing lifecycle operating expenses, and supporting an accelerated project timeline.

The Challenge
Balancing Performance, Reliability, and Speed

Hyperscale cooling systems rely on dependable water quality but treating water beyond what the application truly demands can increase project costs, complexity, and delivery timelines.

The project required a practical treatment strategy that balanced water quality performance with reliability, simplicity, and speed of delivery while avoiding unnecessary treatment capacity and capital investment.

The customer required a solution that would:

  • Meet cooling tower feedwater specifications
  • Avoid unnecessary treatment intensity
  • Support fast-track construction schedules
  • Handle elevated iron, manganese, and turbidity
  • Minimize operational risk and downtime
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and schedule certainty
The Solution
Treat Only What Needed to be Treated

Rather than defaulting to full flow reverse osmosis (RO), Napier Reid applied a targeted treatment strategy aligned with the actual requirements of the cooling water system.

Treatment Configuration

  • Multimedia Filtration Removes iron, manganese, and suspended solids
  • Selective RO Treatment – Applied only to the portion of flow requiring additional dissolved contaminant removal.
  • Blending Tank – Combines RO permeate and filtered bypass water to achieve target cooling tower makeup chemistry
  • Redundancy – N+1 configuration provides continuous uptime and operational resilience

The Value of Right-Sizing Treatment

Cooling towers do not require fully demineralized water. Rather than sending the entire flow through reverse osmosis, Napier Reid used a split stream treatment approach by combining and blending the RO permeate with the filtered bypass water to achieve the required cooling tower makeup water quality.
This approach delivered:

  • A smaller RO system
  • Lower capital investment
  • Reduced RO operating costs
  • Reduced concentrate volume requiring management
  • Fit-for-purpose cooling tower makeup water quality

The result was a treatment system sized around the water quality required by the application, rather than treating the entire flow to RO permeate quality.

The Outcome
Right-Sized Treatment, Delivered on Schedule

Napier Reid enabled rapid project scoping, budgeting, and system validation, helping the customer maintain an aggressive construction schedule while securing a reliable long-term treatment solution.

The project team highlighted:

  • Fast, responsive engineering support
  • Confidence in delivery timelines
  • Proven groundwater treatment expertise
  • Reliable, operator-friendly system performance
Key Takeaways for Hyperscale Developers
